Isabel Ayres / Fine Art Printmaking BA(Hons)

The work addresses the human condition in the digital age. Portraiture has been the driving force behind my search to convey aspects of connection and disconnection, the way digital platforms have altered the way we communicate and how this affects us as individuals.

Direct observational drawing and traditional printmaking are the tools I use to explore and comment on what it means to be human in this digital world. I draw the portraits of friends I know well and the portraits of life models that present as subjects. I try to treat each equally, with the aim of communicating something about the person in that moment. The body language of an individual has an impact on the emotional charge of a portrait. The gaze, whether it is a direct stare, a sideways look or is focussed elsewhere all communicate different things and I try to emphasize this in each portrait.
