“I Hate the Lake District” Charlie Gere

My work looks at the putrefaction of nature within the beauty of the Lake District. Considering interpretations of myths and experiences that, through juxtaposition, have evolved into the glorification of dehumanization. This heterotopia was typified by a boat trip on Lake Coniston where Donald Campbell died – is sold to tourists as a place of awe in comparison to a site of tragedy to the local community.

To challenge this fetishisation I work with raw materials and gifted objects in printed media, installation and assemblages. Further by etching in metal compounds, enforces the permanency of realism and aims to address the hypocrisy of what we see and believe but don’t really understand.

I am inspired by the installations of Sophie Calle and Kurt Schwitters whose work weave in private experiences, encompassing sensitive subjects that relate to real people, normality of life and death.
