Mellisa Barrett / Fine Art Painting BA(Hons)

My work continues to be in the realm of still life and the everyday. Paying attention to the ordinary of an object or scene and elevating to infer so much through the brushstrokes and mark making. Painting instinctively and playing with local colour has pushed the ordinary into becoming abstracted. Painting wet on wet generates a flow throughout my work, building up colour and line work to shape the painting. I chose to paint familiar objects from daily life purposely unrealistic allowing the objects to adopt a sense of personality that is humorous. Social media has been essential for my practice. The immediacy of Instagram has been vital when sourcing images and using references to draw/paint from. Thus, this being the ‘everyday’.
