A popular Nigerian proverb that inspired this project says, “However far the streams flow, it never forgets its sources.” When someone is a part of the diaspora it can create a sense of identity lost between two homes and a complex sense of self. There are so many layers to one being part of the diaspora such as the music (afrobeats), the celebrations, the food and the general lifestyle. These are some of the ideas that were addressed when designing for this project.

This piece of work is about identity and the importance of understanding who you are and where you come from. Through knitting techniques, I explored ways to imitate traditional Nigerian woven cloth called Aso oke.
