Leterece Carter / Textiles Design with Business Studies BA(Hons)

My final major project ‘Textures of Jamaica’ is inspired by photographs capturing everyday life in Jamaica. This includes looking at different elements such as nature, people and architecture. Through my visual development I specifically observed the textures, colours, and shapes found in these photos. These observations impacted the overall feel of my project. This is visible through my use of weave setups such as interchangeable double cloth, block setup, and extra-warps, enabling me to create shapes and to reveal colour. In addition to this, the use of yarns such as silk, viscose, polyester and cotton within my final sample collection allowed me to create textural light – mid weight fabrics intended for Pre-Fall Menswear.
The inspiration behind Textures of Jamaica conveyed through visual research, weave techniques, colour and yarn choice aims to pay homage to Jamaica, recognising and celebrating its natural beauty.
