Ella Cross / Fashion Communication with Business Studies BA(Hons)

“The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.”

John Berger’s Ways of Seeing inspired the themes of my final major project; the book encouraged me to think about the origins of our beliefs and the significance of the influence of those we trust. This inspired the exploration of masculinity and patriarchy as the key components of my final major project.

My initial standpoint intended to capture masculinity in a negative light; specifically how patriarchy has resulted in a society of power hungry, emotionless and unliberated men, however, I learned these assumptions originated from frustrations within our culture, not the men who live in it. The photographs taken over during this project and the individuals that shared their experiences with me were fundamental to the development of my perspective and clearly showed the necessity of communication and representation in the way we understand each other.
