Tubéreuse Ténébreuse is a dark, romantic printed textile collection which draws inspiration from the work of choreographer Pina Bausch. It explores key themes of human brutality vs human frailty as reflected in the use of florals – particularly dahlias, for the way in which they appear simultaneously both delicate and tenebrous. These juxtapositions appear throughout the collection: from photographs with contrasting shadows inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe, to opposing colours, textures and fabrics.

This project also serves as an ode to my late grandmother, Stella, a rather tormented soul who found solace in her garden and in needlework. I have incorporated some old pieces of lace she collected into the collection, notably to create a series of “trompe l’oeil” prints that convey a certain overall sense of rough and decaying beauty.
