William Hanekom / Design for Digital Media BA(Hons)

Nominated for: Nagoya University of the Arts Prize

I am a freelance illustrator and film-maker interested in animation, character design, storytelling, and overall strange stuff. My likes include old-style horror films, childhood monsters, and the nostalgic past.

I draw a lot from my own experiences as a child and try to recreate that same bizarre headspace when we first experience fear, particularly related to old fairy tales and children’s media. I also tend to mix several mediums into my projects such as 2D animation, stop motion, Cinema 4D and live puppetry.

My home is my workspace: here I can reference past ideas and get into a personal mindset. This helps me engage with the projects I work on a with passion, visualising and experimenting for the screen. My position on the Oska Bright Film Festival Committee supports my passion and helps as a good source of inspiration.
