Rae Howard / Fashion Design with Business Studies BA(Hons)

My collection started with my grandmother’s journey from Trinidad to England as part of the Windrush Generation.

I examined photos taken of the passengers at this time and found myself drawn to the menswear tailoring. I combined this with luxurious Chinese fabrics, Gigli style drape and rich Caribbean colours to create “SYNERGY’; a dialogue on identity and vibrance.

We are of Chinese – Caribbean descent and so this mix of cultures is the inspiration behind the hybrid nature of my work. The robe coat, for example is my response to the cultural melee of London, acknowledges Asian and African garb but is also a sophisticated, adaptable piece. Its uniqueness lies in the eclectic colour and textures of the fabrics, blended with the effortless style of an urban woman to create a contemporary, cool collection.
