Joanna Miles / Media Studies BA(Hons)

Increasingly, my belief is that the ability to deeply change the world starts from the individual’s ability to deeply change themselves. By capturing the universal shades of the self-spiritual pursuit experienced by the individual, I attempt to communicate the polarised moments of existential self-enquiry and the graceful affirmations of spirit. By using photography as a meditative practice, a suspended insight can translate the transcendent and mysterious dissolution we experience when courageously surrendering our preconceptions.

Significant personal challenges and the coronavirus epidemic led to the fine tuning of this project into a self-portraiture series in my bedroom, this ultimately steered me toward a deeper exploration of this project than I ever could have imagined. And as universally significant as it might be, especially now, this project was also claimed on a deeply personal level, the surrounding synchronicities and self-growth that occurred became what I deemed an act of grace and affirmation….
