Emily Powell / Textiles Design with Business Studies BA(Hons)

My final major project is based around disease, more specifically looking at Cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and one in six people die of it each year. However, it is still a sensitive subject which is avoided. The reason I chose this uncomfortable topic was to try and shed a little bit of light on something that we all have to live with.

Inspired by cancer cells and scarred human skin, I have developed knit techniques and a strong pallet of tonal pinks, purples and greens, simplifying the scary subject of cancer into beautiful abstract textiles.

This project is a tribute to my dad, who sadly passed away with cancer in 2013. I wanted to use this time to make sure that ‘cancer’ as a subject does not overshadow what a big, loud, beautiful person he was.
